Monday: Please do the following for Wednesday 10/17:
MB - none this week. We will focus on the lab!! 1. Do the HHMI BioInteractive Click and Learn: Creating Phylogenetic Trees from DNA Sequences. While you do the Click and Learn fill out the handout called Tree Thinking, located to the right. 2. Set up lab 3 on lined paper or typed and bring to class: Title, Purpose (look at your learning objectives), summary of background information. Do the pre-lab questions but skip the online work because you are doing the HHMI Click and Learn. The link is in pink above. Stop by my room and I'll give you a copy of the handout. |

Tuesday October 23rd:
1. Watch the video on Stickleback Evolution and answer the questions on the handout labeled quiz. NOTE: the information in the video and in the lab is important to three AP Biology units: Evolution, biochemistry, and cell signaling. The ETS has included questions on the AP Bio exam using stickleback evolution. The Virtual Lab: Be sure you are using Google Chrome. You can't save and the videos don't work if you are on Explorer or Edge. Click on the link below to do the Virtual Stickleback lab. You may finish this at home. There is also an app. Be sure to sign in with your google login once you are in the virtual lab (should be the same as your student login) to save your work so that you can finish on a different device or computer. Enjoy, this is one of my favs!! Stickleback Virtual Lab |
Week of October 15th
Resource: For additional support with developing basic phylogenetic trees see Khan Academy Phylogenetic Trees Homework - Due Monday the 15th 1. Cladogram practice problem 1 and 2. You do not have to do the Venn Diagrams if you do not want to. BEST to use a pencil on these. Due 10/15 2. Take Home Quiz: Evaluating Cladgrams #1. Due 10/15 3. There will be a quiz on Cladograms on Monday 10/15 We will meet in the library on Monday the 15th. Week of October 1st
Homework - Due Tuesday, 10/9 1. Read Ch. 24 and Do Mastering Biology: The Origin of Species MB is due Monday the 8th by 11:50pm. The rest is due by class time on Tuesday the 9th. 2. Watch the Bozeman Science video: Speciation 3, Be able to explain examples of geologic speciation, pre-zygotic and post-zygotic speciation. |
Week of October 8th
Homework - Due Thursday, 10/11: 1. Read Ch. 26 and Do Mastering Biology: Phylogeny and the Tree of Life. MB is due Thursday, 11:59 pm. The rest is due by class time on Thursday. 2. Watch the Bozeman Science Video: Phylogenetics There is a lot of vocabulary in this chapter so let me help you focus: Essential Vocabulary: phylogeny, analogy, homology, monophyletic Clades, Cladistics, shared ancestral characters and shared derived characters, outgroup, molecular clock. 3. Assignment: As you read the chapter, make a 3 column table with the terms listed above in the left column, a brief explanation in the middle column, and an example or drawing in the right column. https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1525/abt.2010.72.2.9?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents http://virtualbiologylab.org/ModelsHTML5/PopGenFishbowl/PopGenFishbowl.html |
